Is it too soon to be talking about the 2014 Emmys because I don’t think it is and I’m about to do it because I can.
Last night, Breaking Bad finally came to a close but the finale I want to talk about is Ray Donovan‘s (because I don’t care for Breaking Bad. I know, scandalous!). When was the last time you watched a show that had an almost perfect first season? The most recent one for me is Orange Is The New Black, House of Cards and Veep. And now I’d like to add Ray Donovan to that list.
Did you watch? If you haven’t, please do yourself a favour and get caught up. I’m giving you enough time between now and the second season. It’s wonderful, you’ll love it. I promise. It’s like The Sopranos meets Scandal. It’s delicious. How often can you describe a series as delicious? I love Parenthood, but I would never use that to describe it. Ray Donovan gives you everything you need, you feel dirty afterwards and then you need to take several baths.
For me the show obviously belongs to Schreiber. Liev has worked constantly throughout the years but he’s yet to really breakout. Come to think of it, his career reminds of Kerry Washington’s a little bit; you know their face but a lot of people couldn’t guess their name. Liev will always be Cotton Weary for me, of course, but this is his moment. He is totally in his element as Ray and has never been more magnetic. He’s absolutely hypnotizing and he rarely has more than two facial expressions; the character usually goes from angry to angrier and that’s about it. Ray reminds me a lot of the driver from Drive; the silent but deadly type, except with less brooding. Liev gives this guy some depth, when, really, he deserves none of your empathy. Ray has been through some shit but that doesn’t excuse his actions because he’s not a very good person; again, kind of like Olivia Pope (at the end of the day everything comes back to Scandal). You love them, but they need to check themselves. Anyways, I’ve gone on a tangent: watch this show and appreciate Liev Schreiber because he’s having his moment.
